Organ Donation: Whether We Choose to Participate or Not, Research Has Found It Is the Will of Our Families That Matters

Post by misbahulalam »

Organ transplantation allows patients suffering from organ failure to receive healthy organs from a donor. This procedure can help extend and improve the recipient's life, and it is often the only hope for people who need a transplant. Unfortunately, there are not enough organs available for all the patients who need them. In the European Union, although 36,000 patients receive transplants in 2021, 20 patients die each day while waiting for an organ. Differences between laws regarding consent One strategy to overcome the shortage of transplantable organs is to increase the number of potential donors, by making changes to the consent system.

There are two main consent policies for organ donation from the deceased in effect around the world: — an opt-in system , meaning that individuals must actively agree to become organ donors after they die; Accurate and credible information is like oxygen that nourishes us. — an opt-out system , meaning that individuals are deemed to have Phone Number List
agreed to organ donation unless they expressly opt out. In recent years, several European countries have changed their donor consent laws from opt-in to opt-out , including Greece , Iceland , the Netherlands , Switzerland and the United Kingdom . Many European countries are considering it, such as Germany, Denmark and Romania. The rationale behind this change is that an opt-out system can increase the level of organ procurement , assuming the basic assumption is that the individual is willing to donate an organ .

This removes the need for people to actively register as organ donors, which can be a major barrier for some. Family involvement Although several studies have been conducted to assess the true impact of consent policies at the level of organ procurement, the results have been conflicting. Overall, the evidence suggests that opt-out systems are associated with higher rates of organ harvesting. However, it is not clear whether and to what extent the adoption of this system, by itself, causes the increase. In our study , we tried to find out. To exclude the influence of other factors, we focused on how individual preferences and decisions, or lack thereof, directly determine the outcome, i.e. whether or not an organ can be harvested.
